Yes there is. Once logged onto SL, press Ctrl-Alt-D. The menu will have two new options, Client and Server. Under the Client choice, select Character -> Character Tests, then toggle off the Go Away/AFK When Idle selection. That will keep you from going into away mode as a result of inactivity.
I would recommend when actually away from the keyboard to set your avatar to Busy so that others won’t simply think you are ignoring their IMs, but that’s up to you.
