Once logged onto SL, press Ctrl-Alt-D. The menu will have two new options, Client and Server. Under the Client choice, select Character -> Character Tests, then toggle off the Go Away/AFK When Idle selection. That will keep you from going into away mode as a result of inactivity. I would recommend when actually away from the keyboard to set your avatar to Busy so that others won't simply think you are ignoring their IMs, but that's up to you. Yes there is.
